new loves and old friends: moms who text

i know, i'm a mom. and i text. but for purposes of this blog post, i am talking about our moms. i'm not going to say old moms, cause chances are my mom is reading this. mom, if you're reading this, you're not old. read my post from the other day...you are a young soul. and you happen to look young, too. i mean, nora and i had to get our smokin' hot looks from someone, right? (and we all know it wasn't dad.) dad, if you're reading this, i'm kidding. nora and i are like your younger, girlier twins. ok, maybe not girlier. again, kidding. why are you so sensitive, dad?

anyways, back to texting. chris and i went to dinner last night at a neighborhood restaurant that nora and another sister (what up carrie?) happen to work at. during the course of our evening, my mom texted me. She was trying to tell me her plans for the weekend. what she was trying to say is that she is going to see my uncle greg and aunt dorothy this weekend. now, for some odd reason, we call dorothy "dot". she doesn't know this. dorothy, if you're reading this, pet names are a sign of love. i digress...and now i've rambled so much that the end of this story will no longer be funny. long story long, here is the series of texts i got from my mom.

"we're staying in town this weekend – going to see greg and dits tomorrow!"
30 seconds pass and...
"iran dots"
30 more seconds pass and...
"i mean dots"
she finally gave up and went back to her wine. love you, mom!

it's still funny to me, but that's because she's my mom. and also because when she says she only had one glass of wine, we all know that this is the glass she's drinking from.

again, sorry mom...but you know you want that glass now, right?

on to the outfit i wore to dinner. my favorite granny sweater. in fact, chris told me that his grandma used to own one just like it. that made me love it even more.

new loves and old friends: the blogger meet-up edition

i have mentioned a few times that i got to go to the fabulous minnesota blogger get together last saturday. it was a hot hot day, and for some reason, i decided to straighten my hair (gotta look cute for other bloggers, right?) however, it was so hot and humid, that i really wish i would have taken all my pictures the minute i got there because after about two minutes, the curls came out. and not the cute ones. regardless of my bad hair day, it was so much fun. i saw some old friends, some newer friends, and met some brand-spankin' new friends who will hopefully continue to be a part of my life, even beyond the great wide web. i'm sure you know how i feel...i felt that i knew most of these ladies already because i read their daily quips and see their daily wares. so when i met them, it wasn't awkward or weird...it was just plain fun. btw, i feel like i know most of you, too...let's do a meet up soon, k? warning, i'm a hugger.

the party was at this gorgeous barn. lori of girly muse has a seriously nice place. i asked her if she rented out for weddings, because i want to have mine there. i mean, i'm not engaged or anything, but if that day comes, this would be my dream spot. the barn was lovely (who doesn't love chinese lanterns?), the food was yummy, the drinks were delish (thanks, kimi for the whipped cream vodka/diet orange crush...who knew???), and the ladies were beautiful. each.and.every.single.one.of.them. beautiful inside and out. i know, i'm gushing...

i didn't get enough pictures...the vodka/crushes took their toll, along with the heat. there were so many more lovely ladies there, i wish i had pictures of everyone. there was a photographer who got a picture of us all, so i'm waiting too see that one. but really, i had a blast and am so lucky to live in a great state with so many beautiful and friendly women! thanks for the good times, ladies...can't wait for the next one (karaoke, you say?)

new loves and old friends: nothing comes between me and my calvins

(except maybe a pair of granny panties)

a few months ago, i asked you all the question, "what is the perfect pair of jeans?" well, i think i found them. i was thrifting the other day...i had had a bad day, and needed a little retail therapy. really, i needed to buy dog food, and i used that as an excuse to go to a thrift store. they're related, right? anyways, i saw these jeans on the 50% off rack and thought they looked adorable. they also looked teeny. but i grabbed them, because, hey...if they don't fit me, i can always donate them to the shop! but lo and behold, they were like the sisterhood of the traveling pants. they fit. and not only did they fit, but they were pure comfort. waist line just high enough to cover my l'il tummy, hips wide enough to fit, but not so snug that they make me uncomfortable. sure, they were a little short, but nothing that a little cuffing can't fix. voila, the perfect jean. plus they are vintage calvin klein, so i can totally pretend i'm a blue lagoon era brooke shields when i wear them.

new loves and old friends: friday therapy

i hope you don't mind...i need to vent a little.

do you ever feel skinny until you put on a pair of freshly washed jeans? why don't bangs grow faster? why do ugly bangs have such an effect on my mood? why can't you reason with a four-year old girl? why did i have to clean my house before the cleaning person came today? (before you judge, we got a groupon for a house cleaning, we do not have a regular house cleaner.) why don't we have a regular house cleaner? why was i in such a rush this morning that i didn't have time to eat breakfast? (see "why can't you reason with a four-year old girl" for the answer.) why did my subway egg white on flatbread stink up the entire elevator?

ok, that last one i don't really care about. it was more funny than anything else. of course i get on an elevator with eight other people, and all i can smell (and i'm assuming all they can smell) is the funky fart-like smell of my egg white sammie. sounds appetizing, no? well, it's delicious – i don't care what it smells like!

thanks for letting me rant. anyone have anything to add? feel free, i'm all ears! but first i need a little advice from you. i got this shirt a while back and have only worn it once. i wore it out to a restaurant for nora's birthday party. i got a lot of looks, and one, "my daughter really loves your sparkly shirt" comment. i do love it, but i don't have many occasions to wear it. i don't really care about being overdressed in situations, but this might be a bit much for an easy night out. as i was going through my closets to figure out what to get rid of for the garage sale this weekend, this one came out as a tentative. nora has a way of convincing me to keep things (unless she likes it), and told me that i should keep this. so i slept on it, and then i tried it on, then i took pictures so you could all help me. so, should i keep it?

new loves and old friends

megan gave me this awesome shirt last night and i could hardly wait to wear. boy, does she give me a lot of cute clothes. she'll be sorry someday...like when she is naked and i have all of her cute clothes. (insert evil laugh here). anyhoo, it is quite the "loud" top, so i paired it with simple black skinnies, clean, classic shoes (which will be available at our garage sale this saturday! if you like them, are a size 6/6.5 and live in the minneapolis area, come and get 'em!) and almost no accessories. i love that the beading on the belt matches the shirt almost perfectly. my bracelets kind of do, too, but that was unintentional. i haven't taken them off since sunday. expect them in all of my photos for a while. love them!

in most of these photos i am looking off to the right. there was obviously something really cool over there...i just can't tell you what it was...

forget measuring life in coffee spoons, i think i could measure my life by my shopping sprees . 2001 was the year of the express v-neck t-shirt (i bought one in practically every color). then there was the year (or two) of target long and lean tanks (still own about a million of them – they are perfect for layering). black dress pants, check; short flowy skirts, check. when i like an item of clothing, i look for it in every color. seriously, i go a little crazy, it's a titch pathetic.

my newest craze is vintage tees. and not even vintage; as long as they are soft and the sleeve hits me in just the right spot, we're on. the fact that i can get them at thrift stores for under $1 doesn't hurt either. i have found a few that i love (see here), and surprisingly, i have told myself that i can stop shopping for them now. after all, i don't need 30 t-shirts, five will do!

i found this one at a garage sale last weekend. of course, it's a minnesota (zoo) tee, so i love it...because i love all things minnesota (another shopping obsession). i love tees paired with skirts. i love the casual, yet chic feel to it. to see awesome examples, check out kimi at all the fuss. she rocks vintage tees and skirts...love it! i have this skirt that i normally wear as a dress...but today i decided to fold it over a few times and wear it as a shorter skirt. how original huh? a skirt worn as a skirt! avant garde!

i scored these shoes this weekend while out thrifting with megan (i know! can you even believe we were out thrifting??? so surprising.). i saw them from afar and loved them immediately. lucky for me they just happened to be my size! they are such a great summer shoe. and, you guys, they are so flippin' comfy! bonus! i can tell you right now they will get worn a lot. they are such a fun, bright green, so i though maybe i should tone down the rest of my outfit. maybe some navy blue and white. nothing too flashy. then i thought again...and ended up throwing my favorite red vintage top. why not, right???

new loves and old friends: a three-hour tour

i feel a bit like mary ann from gilligan's island in this outfit. she was always my favorite. sure, ginger was a glamorous movie star, but mary ann was not overtly sexy like ginger. she was the girl next door (if you lived on a deserted island) and let's face it, she was super sexy herself. but i don't feel like her because i think i look sexy, i just think the patterns and the colors are reminiscent of something she'd wear. very practical for island living.

i always felt a little sorry for mary ann. she never got a designation in the theme song. there was the professor, the millionaire and the movie star, but she was just plain ol' mary ann. although i guess that's way better than just being the millionaire's wife. do you think the song writers got lazy...what can we say after "the millionaire"? hmmm....how about, "and his wife"? easy peasy. although in the 60s, when this show was on, i guess that was an "appropriate" title. and lovey never really did do anything on that island...she was just a lazy old rich biddy.

but anyways, my outfit. i bought this shirt on a whim at a thrift store for half off. i believe i paid $2 for it. not too shabby. i figure i can wear it all summer with shorts, skirts, leggings. what else can you wear shirts with? (i sound like bubba from forrest gump...you can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it.) i'm all over the place today...sorry, it's friday! so this shirt, i love it. i didn't think i would, but i do, so i will be wearing it tons this summer. look for it featured at such places as garage sales, car washes and picnics!

new loves and old friends: should they stay or should they go?

one of the great things about nora and i running a vintage pop-up store is the freedom to shop. i can buy cute clothes at any point for myself, without even trying them on, because i know if i don't like them for me, i can always give them to the shop. of course i want them to look cute on me, but this doesn't always happen. having said this, i need your opinion. i went shopping last night and found these adorable jeans. i am torn. they are so cute, and i want to give them to two birds, but i also want to keep them. so i'm going to let you decide. i already know they are cute...that is not the question. the question is, are they cute for me, or should they be cute for another it's a date customer?
